Today during iDevelop, a group of Learners were using materials to explore place value of tens and ones.    I asked Elham to find out how many ‘ones’ cubes she would need to make a ‘ten’.  This understanding is important as it will support her thinking when she begins to add numbers in which the total is greater than its place value, e.g. 7+6 = one ten and 3 ones. Elham was then asked to count out the number of ‘ones’ cubes and ‘tens’ sticks to make a given number.   She needed support to understand that each cube had a value of one.

During this learning, Elham demonstrated that she was: Connected -  listening to the learning conversations and showing that she understood how the shape of each piece represented a number, with support Capable - beginning to understand place value and correcting her original answer by making adjustments to the number of cubes that she used Thinking about the question and task, then proceeding to gather the cubes and sticks that she required Using Language, Symbols and Text  - using two digit numbers Managing Self  - able to use the equipment appropriately and remain on task until she had completed it

Use the equipment independently to make more two digit numbers Teach someone else to use the place value equipment Use the ‘hundreds’ square to make a three digit number

Today Elham chose to complete some number exercises during her independent learning time. She chose to practice her counting and writing numerals and successfully completed numbers 1-20 with her numerals and counting improving.

Elham was practising her numbers to 20. I wonder if she can do her numbers to 30 next?

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Elham was developing her Capabilities in maths, whilst Collaborating with her peers. She was working with others, taking turns to write the numbers so that they could all have a turn at every number (Relating to Others; Participating and Contributing). Elham was Thinking about her numbers and how the numerals were formed, followed by putting the cards in numerical order (Managing Self).

Write numerals without the number cards. Write the words for the numbers. Write numbers to 30. Share learning with home.

Today the Learners had an opportunity to use the ‘Zoom Tool’ during iExplore to create shapes and objects.   Elham watched other Learners, then took a few sticks and balls.  She had to look at the ball to find the correct gap shape in which to attach the blue stick to.  Elham was pleased with her diamond shape and was able to describe its features, e.g. how many sides.

Elham was Curious to find out how to use the ‘Zoom Tool’.  She observed what other Learners were making, then set about to create her own design.   Elham was Connecting her maths knowledge to construct a diamond shape.  She demonstrated Managing Self  by carefully using the equipment and cleaning up after herself.

Today during iDevelop our reading group worked together to recognise high frequency words in order to play Word Bingo. Learning these words develops reading skills and enables them to read books with confidence.

I wonder if they can play this game independently? Do they practice finding high frequency words in their reading books at home?

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

These learners worked together Collaboratively. Each learner showed skills in Participating and Contributing to share their knowledge with each other. They also showed their Capability in using Language, Symbols and Text.

Practice high frequency words at home (Please use the Magenta Word List on our Learning Habitat website) Continue to identify and read many known words, both in isolation and in books and other places Use these skills on a daily basis to increase reading capability

Today for iExplore Elham choose to “create” with the magnetic shapes. She first made a large star with the triangle pieces. Then Elham came to me to show me her next creation. “Look,” she said. “Rapunzel's tower!”

Elham made Rapunzel’s tower. I wonder if she knows the story that goes with the tower?

Key Competencies/Vision Principles

Elham is making Connections between something she has seen and what she could create with the magnetic shapes. She was able to Think what to make and then create it. Elham was able to work by herself without any guidance on this task (Managing Self).

Use the tower to tell Rapunzel’s story. Can Elham instruct another Learner to create a tower too? Share learning with home.
